The History and Evolution of the Volvo Brand

When you're searching for new Volvo models in Denver, you may wonder just how the stately and elegant car brand came to be. And how has it gotten where it is today? To answer that, we'll have to go all the way back to April 14, 1927, when the first Volvo car left the factor in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Built to survive the harsh Swedish climate, Volvo models were immediately renowned for their toughness and durability. That concept also serves them well in the Denver area, where our rough, snowy winters can take a toll on any vehicle.

The first Volvo models introduced to the American market were sold in the mid 1940's, and immediately they earned a reputation for standing up to our varied climates.

Today you know Volvo as a pioneer of vehicle safety, a tradition that began way back in 1959. At that point, the Volvo PV544 was the first ever vehicle equipped with the familiar three-point safety belts we know of today.

The pivot toward being a family-centric car brand began in 1964 with the launch of the Volvo 140. This four-door sedan was more spacious than anything Volvo had ever done, and was followed by a station wagon that afforded extra cargo space as well.

Over the next few decades Volvo would spend their efforts pioneering some of the most important automotive safety innovations that are still in use today. Crumple zones that dissipate crash energy to protect occupants, as well as a collapsible steering column that limited cabin intrusion in the event of a front-end impact were standout features. Meanwhile, rear-facing child seats were researched and implemented as a safer way to travel with young children. Side collision protection was pioneered by Volvo as well, and finally the three-way catalytic converter which helped reduce harmful emissions was also first utilized by Volvo.
